Science Service Records

Science Service Record series

Once a week for seven weeks, or at any other intervals you choose, bring one of these great scientists to your classes.

1) Pass around this picture, which we supply with the record. The picture, done by the beautiful gravure process, is on heavy photogravure paper, size nine inches square.

2) Read his brief biography which we have printed on the back of the picture.

3) Put the scientist's record on a portable or other phonograph, for the instruction and inspiration of the classes. Play it once or twice or as many times as necessary to be sure that the students will remember what they have heard. That is a great advantage of this method.

4) Then, if you desire, discuss the speech with the students, asking questions. For your convenience in teaching, the full speech is also printed on the back of the photograph.

(part of the manual "You may have these SEVEN GREAT SCIENTISTS talk to your classes")

DURIUM MOTHER GOOSE part 1-2-3-4-5-6: These six round 4”-inch records were published in a small album entitled OLD KING COLE'S PARTY. On the reverse pictures with the (children) songs.

Mind that the pseudonym UNCLE TOM was also used for Harry Hemsley on the Durium For The Young Folks series

The folder of the US-edition is 5”x 4 ½ “in size, red colored with a drawing of Old King Cole surrounded by children. // A similar series was pressed for export to Europe in the beginning of 1933. Mind the different logo. On the reverse pictures with the (children) sangs, but there are copies with a blank reverse. The folder was different too; a fairy with three records and the words < NINE NURSERY RHYMES ON THREE RECORDS for 6 d > < By Uncle Tom >  < Unbreakable – unscratchable of light weight – plays with any needle on any gramophone > < durium “MOTHER GOOSE”  Series A Parts 1, 2 & 3 >  On the drawing of the records the titles of the songs. The second cover has the same text, but < Series A Parts 4, 5 & 6 >

Records from the collections of Doug Benson (USA).- Hans Koert (The Netherlands) , Stewart Marsh (USA)  and the Hans Koert durium archive.
